Woodland Carbon Task Force launched in UK

31/03/2010
The Forestry Commission today launched the Woodland Carbon Task Force, aimed at kickstarting an increase in woodland planting to help tackle climate change in the UK.

It has also been announced that the Task Force will be key in delivering Defra's Climate Change plan, which was also launched today.

The Climate Change plan is an implementation of the strategy laid out in the Government's Low Carbon Transition Plan from July of last year, which clearly pointed to the benefits of planting new woodland to help remove carbon dioxide from the atmosphere.

The plan included an example where planting 10,000 hectares of new woodland annually, over a period of 15 years, could remove 50 million tonnes of C02 from our atmosphere by 2050. It also pointed out that if the wood produced was used to replace fossil fuels and employed in the construction industry, it could save an additional 37 million tonnes of C02.

The objective of the Woodland Carbon Trust is to help create the conditions to deliver on the planting figures already set out.

Paul Hill-Tout, director of Forestry Commission England, said: "It is now recognised that our woods and forests have a significant part to play in helping curb climate change. The Woodland Carbon Task Force will deliver the Forestry Commission’s contribution to shifting society to a lower carbon economy."
