Wood fuel take-up encouraged across UK and Europe
22/01/2010
Studies indicate the European market for wood fuel as an alternative to more carbon-heavy sources of fuel is set for an expansion, along with a huge increase in capacity, thanks to new power plants in the UK and France.
A study by German research institute Fraunhofer UMSICHT and energy consultancy ecoprog found new wood-fired power plants in Europe will increase biomass capacity by 50 per cent by 2013.
Meanwhile, the Forestry Commission is calling upon UK businesses to invest in wood fuel heating systems in order to take advantage of the booming market expected in the coming years. The Forestry Commission is a body put in place to promote sustainable forestry in Britain.
The market is growing alongside a recent increase in take-up of non-domestic biomass boilers. A report by the Forestry Commission revealed that there are 1,960 of these boilers installed in England as of 2009. Some 290 were installed last year in the Yorkshire and Humber region alone.
“Wood fuel boilers are suitable for a whole range of larger, commercial and community buildings,” says Rudie Humphrey, the Forest Commission’s wood fuel officer for the Yorkshire and Humber region. He continues, “we want more people to consider this locally-grown, traditional fuel as a future energy source.”
