What Investment recommends investing in trees

01/05/2009
Investment website WhatInvestment.co.uk says that investing in forestry has never been ‘more popular or more accessible.’

The site explains that smaller investors are now able to invest in wood and trees through vehicles like funds, unit trusts and investment trusts, rather than having to invest directly, which marginalised smaller investors.

The average return on investment in UK forestry in 2007, which are the most recent available statistics, was 31.6%, up from 20.3% the year before and double the 14.4% return measured in 2005. This shows that the investment return in growing.

Whatinvestment.co.uk explains that in 2006 forestry outperformed major asset classes including equities, gilts and commercial property. The market for forestry investment is extremely diverse, attracting environmentally conscious investors along side those who simply want to invest in a safe, profitable asset class to hedge against riskier deals.

Another reason to invest in forestry is for capital gains tax reasons, as the increase in our investment in timber is exempt from capital gains tax. In addition investors do not have to pay income or corporation tax on any income generated from a timber crop.
