Walt Disney announces plans to invest in forestry

04/11/2009
The Walt Disney Company has revealed plans to invest some $7 million in forestry in countries including Peru, the US and the Democratic Republic of Congo.

The firm says it will support projects that “safeguard ecosystems that benefit climate and quality of life on the planet.”

The move will be welcomed by environmentalists and also by Disney fans who have watched the company's animated films featuring beautiful natural landscapes, including jungle, in films like Jungle Book and Tarzan.

Roger Iger, the CEO of Disney, adds: "Now, more than ever, it's essential to take swift action to preserve our most vulnerable natural environments for future generations and to be innovative in achieving that goal."

Forestry projects in the Congo Basin, the Peruvian Amazon and the US will benefit from the investment programmes, which are in collaboration with Conservation International, the Nature Conservancy and the Conservation Fund.

Disney hopes the investment will help to boost the amount of forest in the regions being supported, helping forestry communities and reducing the amount of carbon dioxide in the atmosphere through its absorption into the additional trees.
