US construction industry returns to timber

10/06/2009
The construction industry in the US is beginning to use more wood as a cheaper and renewable alternative to steel. Many firms are struggling to make ends meet and are ‘going back to timber’ as an effective, cheaper, renewable building resource.

According to US commercial construction contractors, steel is struggling to compete with timber as a material for major constructions as the price of steel increases. According to Scott Brady, a construction sub contractor in San Diego, steel costs 15% to 20% more than wood if you compare similar projects.

In addition to the price issue, wood is a better material to be used in areas that are susceptible to earthquakes as they have flexibility. Timber is often used for single story buildings such as churches and schools.

The sustainable angle is also a seller, according to the industry insiders who have noticed more focus on the environmental impact of construction, particularly with public building projects.

The market for wood is expected to grow further as developments to make wood fire-resistant continue. There are also efforts to try to develop composite recycled wood for use in doors, window frames and decking.
