Tasmania may open wood pellet mills
16/12/2009
In preparation for the introduction of carbon-offsetting legislation, Tasmania is considering opening a pellet mill that produces pellets that European nations can use for fuel.
Forest Enterprises Australia is looking into the possibility of the market for a pellet mill, which could turn Tasmania’s trees into valuable wood pellets for burning in other countries around the world.
European legislation already gives firms offset benefits for burning wood instead of coal. More similar legislation may be on the cards for the rest of the world as a result of climate change discussions occurring currently in Copenhagen, which may further boost the market for wood pellets.
Robert Eastment, an Australian industry analyst, says Tasmania is an ideal location to spearhead the pellet mill concept as it is rich with forests, which can be used to sustainably produce fuel for the world market.
He explains, “they are short of wood. They don't have anywhere near sufficient wood to burn to be able to meet the European targets."
"So they're going to be down in places like Tasmania looking around buying the wood, and the wood is shipped out, but instead of woodchips it's wood pellets.”
