Sustainable timber to be talk of trade event

The Third International Timber Trade Federation Day will highlight the marketing of legal and sustainable timber as its key topic when it takes place in Switzerland in the autumn.
Government representatives, public institutions, NGOs and timber trade federations will gather in Geneva in October to discuss and plan the future of the industry with the main discussions taking place under the topic “Maintaining the momentum – marketing legal and sustainable timber."
The conference – which is taking place on 6-8 October – will seek to address the disconnection between the price-sensitive demands and the prohibitive costs of legal and sustainable production. A significant risk it seeks to address is that these factors could limit responsible timber to niche markets.
A spokesman for the event said, “A general lack of demand and buyers’ inability to pay price premiums is discouraging for producers, especially those in countries with weak forest governance systems and for whom the relative effort of achieving legality or sustainability certification is substantial compared to counterparts in Europe or North Africa."
The conference is being part-funded by the European Commission, which is using its Timber Trade Action Plan to engender discussion and propose ideas on improving the visibility for legal and sustainable timber.
Legislation, codes of conduct, Voluntary Partnership Agreements and the need for certified timber to be given fair credit in sustainability standards in construction, are also expected to be discussed.
