Support for forestry biofuel projects in Montana

28/09/2009
Communities all around the US are showing an interest in increasing the use of biofuels generated from the by-products of the forestry industry.

Republican Denny Rehberg has sponsored new legislation in Montana, which is intended to help schools and communities produce energy from woody biomass.

The issue is particularly relevant in Montana as the region needs to invest in forestry to regenerate areas devastated by wildfires.

The legislation would introduce a revolving loan fund that could help schools and public organisations cover the initial costs involved with converting woody biomass into energy. The public buildings will then pay back the money borrowed, without interest, from the savings they make from using renewable energy.

Rehberg, who is a member of the House Energy and Water Appropriations Subcommittee, explained, “this will go a long way toward helping Montana’s schools and communities create jobs, promote healthier forests and reduce energy costs.” He added, “as a part of an all-of-the-above energy solution, biomass can move us away from foreign sources of energy and toward the next generation of alternative energy production.”

In addition to this project, the Montana Department of commerce has also announced it will be awarding two firms some $425,000 to help them set up biomass energy feasibility studies.
