South America to become major player in forestry industry

26/02/2010
South America is likely to become a major player in the timber industry, according to forestry products company Weyerhaeuser.

John Guerin, European commercial director of Weyerhaeuser, has published his view that “Whereas first West Africa and later the Far East were the ‘bread basket’ for tropical plywood throughout most of the 20th century, the declining availability of logs and, in some cases, environmental pressures have brought China and South America to the fore as sources of ‘tropical’ plywood alternatives over the past decade.”

The plantation forests that exist in Uruguay, for example, are helping to meet the modern-day demand for sustainable forestry products. Plantation forests allow wood to be produced more efficiently, as wood properties can be managed to achieve uniformity of species and size. This increases processing and manufacturing efficiency, which has a knock-on effect on the forests’ sustainability.

One example is Uruguay, which has designated forestry zones with soils and climate that support superior tree growth: in fact, many of the trees grow 15 times faster than native tropical species. When more wood is produced in less time, the amount of land required to grow it shrinks, and the sustainability of the forest expands.
