Shell considers role of technology and bio fuels in reducing CO2 emissions
08/07/2009
On Wednesday, 15th July, Shell’s chief technology officer and his team are to hold a webchat to discuss the role of technology and bio fuels on the reduction of CO2 emissions.
The 'Shell Dialogues' are intended to give the public an insight into the oil giant’s views on environmental topics via an open, online Q&A session.
Shell says it has consulted with bio-fuels expert Dr Jeremy Woods from Imperial College London on the subject of biofuels. He has explained that as the demand for fuel continues to increase, it may be possible to ‘grow’ our fuel through sustainable forestry.
Instead of using food crops to produce bio fuels, the bi-products of the forestry industry can be used.
Woods explains that the issue of how and where we produce alternative fuels must be dealt with in the coming ten to 15 years. He says that the retention of forested land is essential for the environmental health of the planet. Investing in forests is a way to protect against deforestation and developing energy from forestry bi-products may help to make those investments increasingly profitable.
This planned Shell Dialogue shows that the major energy firms in the world are taking the issue of bio fuels very seriously as a realistic alternative to fossil fuels once supplies start to run dry.
