Scottish biofuel plant to ship in timber from the US
22/02/2010
The planned biomass power station in Leith, Scotland is to source its wood pellets from the US, prompting concerns about its green credentials.
Wood chips that will be turned into ‘green’ energy at the biomass plant are to be shipped in from outside Scotland. Millions of tonnes of chips are needed to fuel the plant at Ocean Terminal near Edinburgh, which is expected to be able to produce enough energy to meet most of the city’s energy needs, according to Forth Energy, which is developing the site.
The project is due for completion in late 2014 or early 2015, but is still subject to the approval of the Scottish government
The wood chips need to be shipped in from US and Scandinavian sustainable forests as Scotland currently lacks enough forests of its own. However, green groups are calling for Scotland to plant more of its own sustainable forests to keep the plant in wood chips.
Green MSP for the Lothian region, Robin Harper, says "under no circumstances should we be importing woodchip into Scotland when we could be growing our own instead.”
