REDD scheme agreement close to completion in Copenhagen
18/12/2009
The chairman of the Reducing Emissions from Deforestation and Degradation (REDD) organisation says that delegates attending the Copenhagen Climate Change Forum have “more or less" come to an international agreement.
Reuters news agency has reported that chairman Tony La Vina stated yesterday that the talks were coming to the final straight. He stated, "I consider this more or less agreed text except in a few places.” He was referring to agreements about how to increase investment in forestry to improve forestry protection and help prevent climate change.
The draft agreement from REDD states that forestry projects would be included in the carbon market, allowing countries to exchange forestry protection projects to generate cash by selling carbon credits.
Early stages of REDD action projects are already underway in 40 countries. These are proving effective in tackling deforestation and also help to generate income for developing countries.
Trees absorb carbon from the atmosphere and store it safely, which means that forests are a natural environment cleaner. Putting a monetary value on forestry may help to increase its value and help people to look at the trees as being worth more standing than being cut down.
