Putin says Russian forests hold great climate change prevention potential

06/11/2009
The Prime Minister of Russia, Vladimir Putin, has spoken out in advance of next month’s UN Climate Change Conference to say that Russia’s forests hold great potential to reduce carbon dioxide in the atmosphere and this should not be overlooked.

Putin said: "Are we ready to support Denmark's efforts in the post-Kyoto period? We are ready to do this.” Then he added: "But there are two conditions: all countries must sign it. And Russia will insist that the capacity of its forests for absorbing carbon dioxide must be taken into account."

The issue for Putin, and the leaders of many other countries, is that they believe their emissions allowances should be offset against the carbon absorption potential of their forests. Russia spelt out similar provisions when signing the Kyoto Protocol agreement, which expires in 2012.

Putin’s statement further cements the value of forestry as a potential tool to combat climate change in the future. As climate change progresses and the effects become more evident, the value of the world's forests is set to rise, potentially making a lot of money for those who own and invest in the trees.
