Public forest area on the rise in Brazil

09/12/2011
According to new research presented at the recent Commission on Public Forest Management, the total area of public forests in Brazil has risen since last year.

The annual National Register of Public Forests, which was compiled by the Brazilian Forest Service (SFB), showed that the area has increased by 4.2 per cent since 2010, with 35 per cent of the country now covered in forests that come under federal, state and municipalities or the Federal District ownership.

This equates to around 297 million hectares of public forest, meaning that the rise saw a further 12 million hectares fall under ‘public forest area’.

Accounting for around three million hectares of public forest is military areas, which were included for the first time in the National Register of Public Forests.

Other hectares were accounted for by indigenous lands with 110 million hectares, federal conservation units with 61 million hectares, areas for state with 41 million hectares, land reform settlements with 10 million hectares and municipal areas with five million hectares.

Jobert Freitas, director of research and forestry information at the SFB, told Forestry Panel, “It's important to know where they [public forests] are … because they can be used in future for the sustainable production of forest goods and services, including through forest concessions.”
