Positive attitudes increasing towards carbon forest offsets

03/05/2010
A new report has revealed that attitudes of corporations towards carbon offsetting in forestry projects are becoming increasing positive, especially in Europe.

The report, entitled ‘Carbon Offsetting Report 2010' is the second annual report put together by EcoSecurities, a leading firm in sourcing and developing projects to reduce greenhouse gas emissions, in conjunction with Community & Biodiversity Alliance, Conservation International, ClimateBiz, The Climate and Norton Rose Group.

The report focuses on the attitudes of big businesses towards carbon offsets from forestry projects. Some 207 companies responded to the survey - 50 of which specialise in carbon operations and the remaining 157 of which are global, multinational or regional companies working in a wide range of industries and sectors.

Some key findings from the research:

Some 80 per cent of respondents have a ‘positive’ or ‘very positive’ attitude towards forest carbon offsetting, compared with 58 per cent in 2009.

Changes in attitude were the greatest in Europe, where 84 per cent of those polled had a ‘positive’ or ‘very positive’ attitude, compared with only 36 per cent in 2009.

South America was the most sought-after area from which to buy forest carbon credits.

According to Dr. Joanna Durbin, Director of the Climate, Community and Biodiversity Alliance: "Companies increasingly recognise that forest carbon can be a key component of their climate change commitment.”
