Obama supports biofuels with new Working Group

President Barack Obama has announced that he will be setting up a Biofuels Interagency Working Group to help boost research and commercialisation in the industry.
Another part of the newly signed Presidential Directive is the setting aside of $786.5 million in additional Recovery Act cash to spend on renewable fuel schemes.
The Working Group is to work with the National Science Technology Council’s Biomass Research and development Board.
Much of the board’s work will involve the commercialisation of the biofuels market, through a comprehensive biofuels market development programme. Encouraging investment from consumers, fund manager and from industries that rely on fuel, such as the car industry, will be vital.
They will also look at ways to ensure materials used are grown and developed sustainably and in accordance with environmental considerations.
The Department of Agriculture has been told it must stimulate investment in the industry and convince refineries to begin processing biomass.
Obama says that investment in biofuels is an essential step is America’s future competitiveness. “We must invest in a clean energy economy that will lead to new jobs, new businesses and reduce our dependence on foreign oil," he said in a speech.
