Nova Scotia forestry investment to create jobs and boost sector

Nova Scotia is to benefit from a multimillion-dollar foresty investment, it has emerged.
The news was announced by natural resources minister John MacDonell and national defence minister Peter MacKay, who said the investment will strengthen forest and environmental management.
Mr MacDonell also acknowledged the importance of the forestry sector in creating "the secure jobs" currently needed by the economy.
"Government recognises that declining demand and prices for forest products have resulted in significant production cutbacks and job losses across Atlantic Canada," added Mr MacKay.
"Through this investment, we are not only immediately strengthening the forestry sector now and for years to come, but we're also creating jobs and supporting rural communities today."
Affecting more than 10,700 hectares of small woodlots and some Crown land in Nova Scotia, the project is expected to create more than 400 jobs, while also ensuring the long-term sustainability of forests and creating carbon offset benefits.
The work will be carried out over the next two years and will include site preparation, planting, thinning and tending to ensure the forests' growth, composition and quality.
