Norway awards Indonesia $1 billion for deforestation projects

28/05/2010
Norway and Indonesia signed a letter of intent yesterday, where Norway will award $1 billion to Indonesia to help it protect against deforestation.

Norway’s prime minister, Jens Stolltenberg, explained that Indonesia will set up a task force to ensure that the grant is used effectively. He said: “Monitoring the implementation is the key to be able to verify whether the grant [disbursement] is making progress and is really reducing deforestation.“

He added that Norway will use the same model it adopted in Brazil, in order to help the country protect its forests. The prime minister said that, according to the Brazilian model, the grant would be paid in line with the progress of the projects chosen for funding. “We pay for the results, it is quite simple,” he said.

President Susilo Bambang Yudho-yono of Indonesia thanked Norway for providing help to Indonesia. He said that the country still faces many challenges when it comes to tackling deforestation, including reducing poverty amongst Indonesians whilst still protecting the environment.

“With Norway’s contribution of course we can do better and reach better results. With this we can achieve what we are aiming for,” he said.
