Jatropha trees offer green investment opportunity
15/04/2009
The oil from the seed of the Jatropha tree is increasingly being seen as a great source of biofuel and, therefore, has become a great investment opportunity for people who want to make money and help protect the environment.
The oil is used as bio diesel, which can be combined with fossil fuels to be used in transportation. The residue from that process is used to create biomass energy that can be used to create electricity.
The farming of the tree helps rural communities thrive, helps to reverse the impact that deforestation has had on communities and the environment and helps create jobs. The crop is also inedible, offering some solution to the debate about whether we should be using crops as food or fuel.
Firms are beginning to offer investment opportunities for the beginning stages of the farming of Jatropha trees, talking of returns on investment of as much as 345% in the first five years.
The Indian and Chinese governments have spotted the potential of this particular tree in helping to combat climate change, with the Indian government having planted 27.5 million acres and the Chinese planning the planting of 3.5 million aces by 2010.
