French firm to set up wood biomass plants in the US

02/03/2009
France-based energy firm Areva is joining forces with Duke Energy to develop wood biomass power plants across the US.

The two firms have created a new firm called Adage, which aims to have opened 12 biomass plants in five years’ time. Investment in each will total around $200 million and they will employ between 20 and 50 employees.

A deal has already been struck between Adage and Energy Northwest in Idaho to create a 50 megawatt power station that is expected to create as many as 150 new jobs at the plant itself and through forestry activities.

Much of the wood will come from privately owned forests, owned by investment firms. The Idaho plant will require waste from 50,000 acres of forest each year to generate the amount of fuel required, All the wood waste must be sourced from within a 50 mile radius to keep costs own.

Using wood waste to generate clean energy is seen as a positive way to reduce carbon emissions and boost the economy of rural communities. Biomass fuel also reduced reliance on imported gas and oil.

Removing wood from the forest floor reduces the risk of fire and improves forest conditions long-term.
