Forestry project in Tennessee under new CAR protocol
12/03/2010
A new Improved Forest Management (IFM) project has been launched in the USA under the updated Climate Action Reserve (CAR) protocol.
The project is being launched in Tennessee and it is predicted that it could generate several hundred thousand carbon offsets over the course of the next hundred years. The project will focus on over 4,300 acres of land in the Brimstone Forest, which is in the Cumberland Mountains in eastern Tennessee.
The latest version of CAR's Forest Project Protocol was introduced in September last year and this is the first IFM project in the east of the country to be listed under it.
At the moment CAR has 24 forestry projects running in the USA, which were submitted under its Forest Project Protocols.
CAR spokesperson, Jennifer Weiss, commented: "Forestry is one of the most popular types of offset projects today, and there is definitely significant interest from developers and buyers that are specifically looking for forestry credits."
She added: "Forest projects under the Reserve’s protocols rank among the highest-quality offset projects, and the premium prices they garner reflect this. Considering the popularity, industry interest and high offset prices, we expect to see continued growth in forestry projects not just in the US but throughout North America."
