Chile-based MASISA earmarks large investment in plant and forests
17/04/2009
Particle board manufacturer, MASISA has announced that it is to invest heavily in forestry this year and will open a board plant in Brazil.
The firm has a new general manager, Roberto Salas, who told El Mercurio newspaper that MASISA had made 1,500 redundancies as part of the firm’s restructuring. It also sold forests and closed a plant in Brazil.
However, its plans for the year to come involve an investment of US$96 million; half of which will go into opening a new plant in Brazil and half will be put into obtaining and developing more forests.
The South American firm relies mainly on construction work and says that although some of its markets have slowed, such as in Mexico, other markets such as Peru and Brazil have felt less impact from the global recession, in terms of construction work in those particular countries. He says, “we didn't expect construction to slow down in Chile; in Brazil, it took longer, but you can fell it; in Colombia, [the effects] have been slower; in Peru, the situation is stabler,"
