Canada’s forests ready for bio-fuel surge

Canada’s forestry industry is in a good position to take advantage of the growing popularity of biofuels.
This is according to a new report from the Forest Products Association of Canada called 'The Future Bio-Pathways Project'. This report looks at the innovative paths forward for the country’s forestry industry.
The report says a number of technologies that help to turn woody biomass into biofuels show considerable promise. The report concludes, ”there is an increasing opportunity to convert biomass - wood-fibre - into everything." In other words, there are opportunities to convert woody biomass into many types of green fuel.
The association realises that all this development must be sustainable and, as a result, the investment and expansion of biomass production will have a positive effect on Canada’s forests and on communities that rely on forestry to survive.
Forest genomics is just one of the technologies being looked into in Canada. This technique should increase forest yields and protect trees. Genomics are likely to take the form of silviculture, intensive plantation and fibre farming. These combined techniques are expected to increase value of timber to plantation owners by up to five times.
