Brazilian forestry exports generate $6 billion
12/09/2012
Brazilian forestry exports generated around $6 billion between January and August of this year, according to recent data.
This put forestry products among the most significant in the export market, the Ministry of Agriculture, Livestock and Supply noted. Soy beans represented the most valuable export, generating $21.4 billion, followed by meat products at $10 billion and sugar and alcohol at $7.8 billion.
Forestry made more than coffee products, however, which only brought in $4.1 billion, despite its close association with the region.
Overall, the country saw agribusiness exports generate $62.5 billion over the eight-month period - a 1.8 per cent increase on the same period in 2011.
Forestry appears to be on a fairly steady trajectory, while other exports registered as showing significant jumps in foreign sales. Fibres and textile products, for example, saw a year-on-year increase of 62.5 per cent in overseas sales.
In terms of where the products are being sent, exports to China showed the largest growth, up by 46.1 per cent. Other hot spots were Egypt, with growth of 40.9 per cent, Venezuela, with 36.2 per cent and Thailand, with 33.3 per cent growth.
