Brazil unemployment rate falls to 6.7 percent
24/09/2010
It was announced yesterday that Brazil’s unemployment rate fell to 6.7 percent last month, compared to 8.1 percent in the same period of 2009.
The unexpected but welcome news came from the Brazilian Institute of Geography and Statistics. This figure compares to an unemployment rate of 6.9 percent in July.
The economy of Brazil is now growing at the same pace as it was before the international financial crisis began two years ago. Cimar Azeredo, a researcher at the institute, said: "The survey shows a significant improvement in the job market in 2010, showing that Brazil has left the crisis behind."
In addition, Luciano Rostagno, chief strategist at CM Capital Markets in Sao Paulo, commented that Brazil’s economic expansion would probably pick up speed in the fourth quarter of this year.
Other positive economic news from the country is that the average monthly income for workers in Brazil increased in August for the third month in a row, reaching US$860 (1,472 reais).
Household income per capita was at US$567 (971 reais) in August, a rise of 1.4 percent on July and a healthy 6.9 percent on 2009.
