Brazil timber exports rise by 24 per cent

08/09/2010
Brazil's timber exports showed a year-on-year increase of 24 per cent in July 2010, according to recent figures from the International Tropical Timber Organisation.

Timber worth $227 million was exported in July this year, compared to $182 million in July 2009. The figures showed a marked rise from the decline witnessed in June, with tropical sawnwood showing particular improvements.

The sawnwood exports rose in both volume and value, year-on-year. Around 44,600 cubic metres were exported in July 2009, rising to 45,400 cubic metres during the same period this year – a 1.8 per cent rise. Their value in the total timber export sum, was worth $21.1 million this July, up 11.6 per cent from the $18.9 million last year.

Tropical plywood exports, however, proved less lucrative, dropping 7.4 per cent during the year, from 9,500 cubic metres in 2009 to 8,800 cubic metres in 2010. The value saw 4.1 per cent shed, from $4.9 million to $4.7 million.

The value of the pine sawnwood exports jumped 20 per cent – from $14 million to $17 million – despite the actual volume only rising 2.8 per cent, from 70,500 cubic metres in July 2009 to 72,500 cubic metres in 2010.

And unlike tropical plywood, the value of pine plywood exports show up to 39 per cent, from $22 million to $30 million.
