Brazil new destination for emigrating Europeans

25/11/2011
Brazil is increasingly being viewed as a land of opportunity by European professionals seeking to escape the economic tumult of their own countries.

The Brazilian justice ministration has said the number of legal immigrants living and working in Brazil rose by more than 50 per cent in the first half of this year, from 962,000 to 1.5 million. The highest proportion of immigrants have come from Portugal, with more than 52,000 Portuguese people arriving in the first half of 2011.

Spanish, French and British residents are also flocking to Brazil in their thousands, with many people looking to establish businesses in Brazil's lucrative and comparatively strong national economy.

Nuria Pont, the head of the Spanish Chamber of Commerce in Sao Paulo, said that many people were now viewing Brazil - with its higher than average GDP growth - "as a land of opportunity".

"Last year, we were contacted by more than 2,000 firms seeking information on how to invest and their number is growing," she explained. "The rise is due not only to the crisis, but also to huge consumer demand in Brazil."

Brazil's attractiveness to immigrants will bolster the nation's army of skilled and service industry workers.
