Brazil fulfilling 'land of the future' prediction

18/08/2010
A 70-year-old prophecy that Brazil was the 'land of the future' looks like it is finally being fulfilled, according to economic observers, as its natural resources and stable economy have made it an excellent investment location.

Austrian writer, Stefan Zweig, wrote 'Brazil: Land of the Future' after moving to the country in 1941, and claimed it was "destined to become one of the most important factors in the development of our world."

Stock market analyst, Chris Mayer, said Zweig's theories on the nation now seemed more and more realised, combining low unemployment and net debt, with sustainable and profitable management of its natural resources.

"Brazil has come a long way," Mayer said. "As one partner at a leading international law firm put it, 'For the first time in the history of Brazil, we have an excellent environment for investment.'"

Mayer said Brazil's position in the world could be improved further when it implements a less complex legal system, more standardized tax rates and fully modernized labour laws. He also said crucial improvements need to be made to its basic infrastructure and its ports should be significantly expanded.

Mayer added that investment in steel in Brazil – which is abundant in natural ores and absolutely imperative to major infrastructure changes – was an excellent prospect. He added that its abundant rainforests and improving management systems also made timber an attractive commodity.
