Bovis to increase amount of sustainable timber it purchases

18/09/2009
Construction giant Bovis Lend Lease has announced that it is to increase the amount of sustainable timber it buys.

In 2008, some 75 per cent of the timber it used in its construction projects was from Forest Stewardship Council (FSC)-certified sources. It says it hopes to continue to improve on these statistics.

In 2010, the firm plans to publish a full report on its timber procurement policies, in a move that it hopes will help its clients to improve their ‘performance’ in terms of their use of sustainable timber.

Bovis says it has goals to cut its carbon emissions by 20 per cent by 2010 and reduce its landfill by 88 per cent over the coming two years. It says its procurement department is helping it to achieve these targets.

The news that Bovis is increasingly reliant on sustainable timber sources is good news for anyone who is thinking of investing in sustainable forestry in the form of a fund or other investment plan. The greater the demand for sustainably-sourced wood, the higher timber prices are expected to climb.
