Benefits of sustainable forest management underlined

20/11/2009
Sustainable management of forest products not only integrates environmental and economic values for current and future generations, it has a positive impact on local communities and can significantly boost their income.

That's according to Dr Martin Golman, deputy director of Papua New Guinea's Forest Research Institute, who singled out third-world countries in particular in his analysis of Sustainable Forest Management (SFM).

As developing countries' tropical forests become deforestation targets, he says, the implementation of SFM is more important than ever.

Indonesia's Antara news agency further reports his claim that forest management should be in line with conservation efforts and land ownership in a given community. Golman suggests that implementation of SFM depends on governments' commitments and detemination of forest regulations and supervision.

The concept of SFM emerged from initiatives produced by various international meetings, including 1992's United Nations Conference on Environment and Development in Rio de Janeiro and the ongoing United Nations Forum on Forests.

Forestry's environmental implications were also recently cited in the "Climate Solutions 2" report from eco-charity WWF. It outlined the use of wood for carbon storage and called for reforestation programmes worldwide, noting the potential profits of the forestry investment sector.
