BA trials bio fuels in boost for forestry
02/12/2009
In a move that could provide a further boost to the forestry investment industry, British Airways is trialling the use of bio fuels in its aircraft.
The flag-carrying airline has partnered with Rolls Royce to test the use of bio fuels in its jets in a move that it hopes will be a step towards the use of environmentally sound fuels in air travel.
Virgin Atlantic and other rivals of BA have already carried out trials of bio fuels. The producers of the bio fuels claim they can reduce carbon emissions by up to 80 per cent, which would make air travel a much less damaging form of transport in the future.
Bio fuels can be produced from the by-products of the forestry industry, with special enzymes used to turn the sugars in the wood products into ethanol. This form of bio fuel production has led to greater investment in forestry worldwide, as the value of trees stands to increase while fossil fuels continue to run out.
Reports claim that the information produced from BA’s trials will help to get bio fuels certified for commercial use in other industries that may benefit.
